Upper Arm Bracelet in al-Dahiyy style 02.01.324

On one bracelet one sphere is missing, otherwise sign of use but nice patina. According to

Ransom, these bracelets are worn by the women of the Mahwit province in Yemen. This pair was both in 1992 in

Eritrea, where Rashaïda women wear them too. Through all our research we could only find 2 occurrence of this type of bracelet: In Ransom 2014 and the site of the Backman Gallery.

Bracelets and anklets are amongst Rashaida women's favourite ornaments. They are worn in pairs, at least one on normal days and many on festival days. Most of these bracelets are found in Ethiopia and Sudan. Muslims are preoccupied with the evil eye, which they interpret as the maleficent energy of an envious look. Silver jewellery had the power to deflect this, as did the eye motif or the protuberances on bracelets.
