Bracelet ot anklet "Khal-khal" from Mauretania 01.09.914

Khal-khal, are the impressive and often very heavy anklets or "chevillières"  traditionally worn by Maure less often by Tuareg women. In old times reserved for the noble casts, nowadays accessible to all rich families. For those who could not afford silver, aluminum was made into jewelry, particularly since a khal-khal would require  a lot of silver for its elaboration. Jewelry makes up the woman's movable wealth, as it is easily transported from place to place in the nomadic way of life.

At least one pair of these heavy anklets form part of the dowry of the Maure women. The anklet is formed by a central chiselled central plate, two bows leading to 2 lateral plates and the ending round knobs. The decoration of the 2 lateral plates is normally different for each plate. The ones in silver form also as monetary reserve and can be traded in times of hardship. They are worn by pairs, the central plate to the outer side of the leg.
