Felt is most likel< the first wool fabric made by humankind.  The washed fleece is beaten with sticks to remove grit and burrs. Then the wool may be combed or dyed before it is spread evenly on a reed mat previously soaked in soapy water. Then the fleece is then sprinkled with hot water, rolled up inside the reed mat and tied up into a bundle. The bundel is rolled backwards and forwards for several hours and then unwrapped and dried.
