This decorated silver hairpin was made by the Hmong, a fiercely independent hill tribe people found throughout SE Asia and Southern China. The hairpin is hollow with silver filigree decoration and is made from good silver. In the past, hill tribe women would sometimes fill the shaft with valuable items such as opium.Antique Hmong silver hairpins of this nature are rarely seen in Laos now.

This fine chain, to wear as bracelet is off snake-like suppleness. These chains are reminiscent of the sacred snake (nâga). "Among the notable nāgas of Buddhist tradition is Mucalinda, Nāgarāja and protector of the Buddha. In the Vinaya Sutra (I, 3), shortly after his enlightenment, the Buddha is meditating in a forest when a great storm arises, but graciously, King Mucalinda gives shelter to the Buddha from the storm by covering the Buddha's head with his seven snakeheads." cit. This necklace is of a type of work known as kamardani, but this example is of high quality. The style of chain is loop in loop with a hooked closure. The effect of the flexible, loop-in-loop chain is that its movement imitates that of a snake, which has associations in Hinduism with fertility and creation.

Formed by phallic or bullet shaped pieces of bone set into metal bezels that are strung together in a neckband or collar. These collars are believed to contain a strong apotropaic magic power to turn away harm, prevent evil spirits rising to the head, or averting the evil eye. Worn by Tharu tribes women in the Nepalese lowlands (karnali region).

This old Kuchi necklace wit its rectangular pendant has lots of clattering dangles and colorful beads, is in its original condition. Some glass inlets are missing, but given its age, it's still in fair condition. An item to collect or individual elements could also be used for original jewellery design. The Kuchi's live a pastoral nomadic lifestyle across Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.
