Strand of 38 old glass powder beads from West Africa, collected in Ghana. Five beads have some imperfections, broken parts.

Headrest made out of light clear wood. The shape tells us that it could be either from
Borana or
Rendille or one of the sourrounding tribes.

These small and thin currencies was widely used throughout Southern Chad and spread even into Niger. Quiggin suggest that the form is influenced by a hoe used in neighboring Darfur and Kodofan. " it was custom to give a certain amount of hoe currency to the fiancée and her father during the engagement ceremonies" (Vitoor p.79). Our collection was acquired during may stay in Chad from 1982 to 1986. They may have been forged by the Kaba, a sub group of the sara tribe. Several ethnic groups use different names: Kokio, Koké, Nari-dul, Lar-ndul, Senne.

A turned and decorated little spice box witrh red and yello colours, and natural markings of age. A hand forged hinge closes the box. These boxes were used for spices etc. Similar boxes are used in the Northern Frontier district of Pakistan, Pakistani-Afghan border areas and Punjab.

This is a cut pile Kuba cloth. Graphically distinctive and richly evocative of central Africa, Kuba cloth is handwoven using the strands from raffia palm leaves. The raffia strands are dyed in a variety of earth tones using vegetable dyes. Historically, the Kuba people have used their cloths as skirts, wrappers, sleeping mats and even currency.

Spinning is performed with natural wooden spindles, and the thread is then wound up on a wooden spun. This is a thread made of local cotton from Benin or Nigeria.

Asnuff bottle made of cast brass from northern Cameroon/Nigeria (Vere?). It begins with a reinforced rim, a long narrow neck, a bulbous body decorated with a concentric pattern, partially erased. An integrated buckle anchors the strap from the stop.

This type of fingering generally attributed to the Dogon (Mali) but you find similar models among other tribes in Mali, and surrounding countries. Blandin, (1988) wonders, on page 37, about the meaning of this type of ring frequently presented in the villages of the cliff. The villagers' responses are varied:
representation of the conical roofs of Dogon dwellings, of goat's or cow's nipples, and more frequently, symbol of fertility representing female breasts.

Telsums(charms) are protective charms as part of the brides dowry, given by the groom to the bride during the engagement. The triangles protect from the evil eye, while the half moon protect from the harmful influence of the declining moon.
