This type of ring, called gyu ya, is threaded into the hair queue it is common in Eastern Tibet, Chamdo area. Clarke mentions that many of these rings have been made by Yunnanese silversmiths.

Antique Tibetan silver earring with turquoise inlay and "coral imitation" beads. They were placed on each side of the face hiding both ears, either attached with small hooks to the headdress or hanging with a thread over the head. Worn by women in the Chamdo region of East Tibet and also in central Tibet. Similar types may also be worn by men.
