Talhakimt, sometimes called Tanfuk are carved out of soft stone from the Aïr ( Assul) or from Hombori. Only worn by women on a cord around the neck. The Talhakimt possesses a particular mystic energy in its simple form.

Large an rich decorated cuff worn by both Nubian and Rashaida tribe women (originating from the Arabian Peninsula and living in Eritrea, Ethiopia as well as Egypt and Nubia). It is hinged and closes with a push pin mechanism. In good vintage condition.

The strand includes a unique mix of different coloured beads including some rarer colours and shapes. Among the 30 beads, 4 of them are broken beads, and others have end chips. The strand is in its original condition as it was acquired in the 1970s in West Africa.

These beads are also called "Dardig" beads (in Mali). They were excavated from the sands of the desert after trading caravans got stranded and left them there. They are several hundred to a thousand years old. A beautiful mixed array of ocean colours the characteristic patina that ancient buried glass takes on.

Manillas are copper or bronze horseshoe shaped armlets, which served as a general purpose currency in West Africa (Guinea Coast, Gold Coast, Nigeria) from the 15th century to the mid-20th century. Manillas were used for ordinary market purchases, bride price, and as burial money. Cowry shells, valued at a small fraction of a Manilla, were used for smaller purchases.

These small and thin currencies was widely used throughout Southern Chad and spread even into Niger. Quiggin suggest that the form is influenced by a hoe used in neighboring Darfur and Kodofan. " it was custom to give a certain amount of hoe currency to the fiancée and her father during the engagement ceremonies" (Vitoor p.79). Our collection was acquired during may stay in Chad from 1982 to 1986. They may have been forged by the Kaba, a sub group of the sara tribe. Several ethnic groups use different names: Kokio, Koké, Nari-dul, Lar-ndul, Senne.

Eleven cotton strips, woven on a narrow loom and then sewn together. A lovely cotton fabric. It was then dyed to get a deep yellow-mustard- colour on black wich motifs stamped on it.
