Yemeni necklace with hamsa pendant 03.01.1293

The ‘Hand’ is an old pre-Islamic symbol to protect against all evil (e.g. the ‘evil eye’). This old apotropaic sign was taken on by Islam as the Hand of Fatima (also called the ‘khemsa’ or ‘hamsa’ = 5) and integrated into the jewellery tradition.
