Agate and carnelian, also known as red agate, are the same species: Chalcedony, a subset of the cryptocrystalline group of gemstones called Quartz. The distinction between Agate and carnelian is not always clear. There is no chemical difference between the two. It occurs in a range of colours, from milky white to to an earthy red-brown. The reddish colour can be intensified by heating, which alters the iron causing the coloration. Historically, carnelian was mined in India or Brazil and then traded around the world. It made its first appearance in Africa when Arab traders began carrying the stone with them on their trips across the Sahara. In 1830 Agate cutting began in Idar-Oberstein with agate shipped back to Germany from Brazil. The bead industry of Idar-Oberstein in Germany, was producing more than 100 million stone beads to be transported to Africa between.1830 and 1880. There is a lot of myth and legend surrounding carnelian. It is said to be a healing stone that stops bleeding and heals wounds. The Egyptians had a strange belief that it would help people in the afterlife, and therefore there was nothing to fear about dying, if a person had one of these stones. They also thought that the journey of the soul could be helped by this gemstone. The Muslim world has always thought of carnelian as a holy stone, and it is mainly used as a seal, and it usually engraved in silver, like that worn by the prophet. Agate and carnelian, tpo be found in West Africa, have been traded since centuries through the Sahara.

Bauxite is an aluminium ore. All African bauxite beads are handmade and drilled, making these beads very labour demanding. African Bauxite beads are known for their unique bauxite colour and bauxite texture. An important centre for bauxite beads, called Abo by the Krobo tribe, is Akyem Abompe in Ghana.
