Once only known to Europeans as ‘the blue men of the desert’, the Tuareg have lived in extreme conditions deep in the Sahara for over a thousand years. The Tuareg ; also spelt Touareg; or Kel Tamasheq, Kel Tagelmust in Tamasheqarte are a large Berber ethnic confederation. They principally inhabit the Sahara and Nortzhern Sahel region stretching from far southwestern Libya to southern Algeria, Niger, Bukina Faso and Mali. The Tuaregs have been one of the ethnic groups that have been historically influential in the spread of Islam and its legacy in North Africa and the adjacent Sahel region. Tuareg society has traditionally featured clan membership, social status and caste hierarchies within each political confederation. Each Tuareg clan (tawshet) is made up of family groups constituting a tribe, each led by its chief, the amghar. A series of tawsheten(plural of tawshet) may bond together under an Amenokal, forming a Kel clan confederation. Tuareg self-identification is related only to their specific Kel, which means "those of".

The Tuareg use a lock (tanast) and key (asrou) to secure their large leather bags containing personal possessions whilst travelling in the desert regions. They employ an elaborate aesthetic when fashioning their inventive locks and keys. Sometimes more complex mechanisms need 2 to 4 keys to be used in sequence in order to gain access. They are made by artisans specialising in this craft using silver, metal, copper, brass or aluminium.

At least one pair of these heavy anklets form part of the dowry of the Maure women. The anklet is formed by a central chiselled central plate, two bows leading to 2 lateral plates and the ending round knobs. The decoration of the 2 lateral plates is normally different for each plate. The ones in silver form also as monetary reserve and can be traded in times of hardship. They are worn by pairs, the central plate to the outer side of the leg.
