The name of Kirdi – which in Arabic means infidel non-Muslim – is attributed to the many ethnic groups, animist, of Sudanese origin, who live in northern Cameroon: Mafa, Massa, Kapsikì, Mundang, Fali, Bana, and Guilli. Cache sexes, Kirdi Pubic Aprons or Pikurans were worn for celebrations, initiation, wedding and other important ceremonies by women who had reached puberty for protection against the evil eye and also to attract attention. They display various stages of personal identity and social ties. The abstract designs on these aprons are composed of triangles, diamonds, zigzags, checkerboards, and stripes, which makes them exciting design items. The government of Cameroon since 1961, has outlawed the use of cache-sexe, but the practice continues under cover of robes.
