Nepal and Tibet are treated in a single gallery. It is often difficult to attribute a single jewelry to a given tribe. Only in Nepal, one counts between 45 and 60 tribes speaking at least 36 languages. The cultural expression may vary greatly from one tribe or region to another. Buddhism, Hinduism and ancient shamanic animism have all influenced a rich artistic production. Most of the items in this gallery have been collected in the 1990 ties in Tibet and Nepal.
Tibetan jewellery has the power to reveal intimate facets of the life of those who wear them. The wearer's sex, his regional origin, his position in the society, his religious preoccupation and beliefs. Many pieces were believed to have amuletic properties. Tibetan belief that without pierced ears, one risks being reborn as an animal in a future life. (From John Clarke; Jewellery of Tibet and the Himalayas)
